High Wind in Alaska, December 4, 2001
5N/178E at 9 pm Monday moved to a position 120 miles south of Amchitka late Tuesday morning. By Tuesday afternoon, the low began to curve west and slowly weaken.

An intense, large 954 mb storm near 42.5N/178E at 9 pm Monday moved to a position 120 miles south of Amchitka late Tuesday morning. By Tuesday afternoon, the low began to curve west and slowly weaken. By Wednesday morning, the center had moved to Attu...then to 180 miles southwest of Attu as a 982 mb center late Thursday morning.The front associated with this storm moved into the central Aleutians early Tuesday, extending in a large arc from just west of Attu to Dutch Harbor and southeast late Tuesday. Prefrontal east and southeast winds just reached warning levels according to sparse observations at Adak and also at Dutch Harbor (the airport). Initially, however, Monday afternoon and Monday night surface maps depicted ships in the north Pacific south of the Aleutians with sustained pre-frontal winds 58 to 69 mph.Adak briefly gusted 62 mph between 2:00 am and 3:00 am AST Tuesday, 12/04/01.Dutch Harbor airport recorded an easterly gust 60 mph between 5:00 pm and 5:30 pm Tuesday (just prior to frontal passage).At Shemya, westerly winds were estimated at 60+ mph Wednesday on the south side of low (missing observations again due continuing modem problems). Pribilofs - Saint George recorded easterly wind gusts up to 58 mph several times between 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm AST Tuesday, 12/04/01.
