High Wind in Alaska, December 2, 2001
A large 972 mb low moved northeast toward Shemya late Friday and Saturday. By late Sunday morning, the front had merged with the arctic front, extending from near Chignik, along the Alaska Peninsula, to 60 miles north of Saint Paul Island westward across the central Bering Sea.

A large 972 mb low moved northeast toward Shemya late Friday and Saturday. The front elongated north and east...crossing Atka around 3pm AST Saturday, December 1, 2001.By late Sunday morning, the front had merged with the arctic front, extending from near Chignik, along the Alaska Peninsula, to 60 miles north of Saint Paul Island westward across the central Bering Sea. The low moved to about 250 miles north of Amchitka at the same time.By Monday morning, the original low had split into two centers...one near the Bering Sea buoy (46035) and the other 250 miles north of Attu. Both lows had weakened considerably by this time and were no longer producing warning level wind conditions. At Shemya - "back side of low" winds were west southwest peaking at 70 mph between 8:30 am and 9:00 am and also between 9:44 am and 9:56 am Saturday, 12/01/01.At Adak, pre-frontal easterly winds Tuesday reached 62 mph between 2:00 am and 3:00 am AST. Warning level wind conditions there lasted from 2:00 am AST through 4:00 am AST. Heavy rains were also reported at the site. Adak remained just under area high wind levels (59 mph) on the back side of the low Saturday.
