Rainfall of 5 to 9 inches was common in these mountainous counties. The 8.87 inches measured at Elkins was the most for any September since records began in 1899. The previous record was 7.52 inches back in 1988. Pickens had 8 inches of monthly rainfall, Glady and Birch River recorded 7.7 inches, while 7.4 inches fell at Hacker Valley. Most of the rain fell on just 4 days, the 10th and 11th, then again on the 24th and 25th. Normal rainfall is 3.5 to 4 inches.
