What happened
The episode as NWS SGF wrote it up.
Thunderstorm winds did widespread damage to areas in and around Mt. Vernon. Several businesses sustained heavy damage at the east end of the Mount Vernon business loop. Winds twisted a large sign off it's pedestal and threw it into an awning that covered gasoline pumps. At an adjacent restaurant, a 130 foot tall sign fell as it's support beams broke. The sign struck two parked 18 wheel trucks. A brick wall on the west end of a car/truck wash collapsed rendering the facility useless. In Mount Vernon's old industrial park area, winds blew apart an overhead door on the west side of a building and damaged a small portion of the roof. Numerous business and street signs were blown down across the area.Numerous trees were uprooted and power poles and power lines were also knocked down. One large tree fell destroying a parked pickup truck. Spotters estimated wind gusts of around 75 mph near Mt. Vernon.
