Tornadoes and Hail in Illinois, April 20, 2000

Numerous trees and power lines were blown down countywide. In Bluffs, several vehicles were damaged due to fallen trees. Also, the roof of a bus barn at the junior/senior high school was torn away by the winds. One tree fell onto a home causing minor roof damage.

Numerous trees, tree limbs, and power lines were blown down. In Concord, part of the roof of a mobile home was torn off causing moderate damage. The garage on another home suffered minor damage. Damage to the mobile home was estimated around $30,000.

As a severe thunderstorm moved east across Cass County, numerous trees, tree limbs, power poles, and power lines were blown down. One mile southeast of Virginia more significant damage occurred to a house. The brick attached garage was destroyed and part of the roof of the house sustained minor damage. Also, two vehicles that were parked nearby were destroyed by flying debris. Seven miles northwest of Ashland, a machine shed suffered minor damage. In the Newmansville area, two storage tanks were blown over and a house sustained major damage when its entire roof was blown off. Debris from the home was blown up to 1.5 miles away to the northeast. No injuries were reported. In Chandlerville, numerous power poles were blown down.

Thunderstorm winds blew over a semi on Route 24 three miles south of Duncan Mills. Also, in Lewistown numerous large tree limbs were blown down and a power pole was snapped off.

Numerous power lines and trees were blown down countywide. In Mason City, a wall on a large storage building was blown off causing $15,000 to $20,000 in damage. Some homes in the area lost a few sections of siding, a few sheds were demolished, and some trees were uprooted.

Numerous trees, tree limbs, power poles, and power lines were blown down countywide. Also, several sheds were destroyed and a couple of irrigation rigs were blown over.

As a line of severe thunderstorms raced across Logan County, extensive damage was reported in northern sections of the county from San Jose to Atlanta. In San Jose, a mobile home was blown off of its foundation. No injuries were reported. In the Emden area, 3 homes sustained major damage and one home sustained minor damage. Also, numerous outbuildings and grain bins were either damaged or destroyed. Two miles east of Emden, a semi was blown over on the off ramp of I-155. The driver received minor injuries.

Widespread damage was reported countywide. In Green Valley, a large empty grain bin was blown over, several sheds destroyed, and an irrigation system was wrapped around a couple of power poles. In Groveland, a radio tower was blown down, causing $500,000 in damage. New townhouses under construction in Pekin were destroyed. In Morton, part of a roof from a business was blown off. Debris from the roof damaged 3 cars in the parking lot. In Washington the storm intensified. A building housing a restaurant and a bakery was destroyed and a hanger at a private airport was destroyed. Three planes in the hanger were damaged. In Minier, several homes sustained roof damage and a couple of sheds were destroyed. Also, numerous trees, tree limbs, power poles, and power lines were blown down countywide.

Several trees were blown down.

Widespread damage was reported countywide. In Stanford, the roof of a business was torn off causing approximately $50,000 in damage. On I-39 northwest of Bloomington, a semi was blown over and at the I-55/I-74 interchange, two semis were blown over. No injuries were reported. At Illinois State University in Normal, windows were shattered in 30 to 40 cars. Also, 6 windows on two dormitories were cracked. At Lake Bloomington, a tree fell onto a police patrol boat, destroying it. In Cooksville, a grain elevator sustained major damage. Two of its grain bins were destroyed and a third one was damaged. Damage to the elevator is estimated around $750,000. Numerous trees, tree limbs, power poles, power lines, and sheds were blown over countywide. Total storm damage is estimated around $1.1 million.

Damage was reported countywide with numerous power poles, power lines, and trees blown down. Numerous sheds were destroyed. The most intense damage occurred from 4 miles east of Metamora through Roanoke and into the Benson area. Fifty-six power poles were snapped off near the intersection of IL Routes 116 and 117. In Roanoke, the roof of a business was blown off and it damaged 20 cars in the adjacent parking lot. In Benson, the legs of a grain elevator were damaged, several outbuildings destroyed, and a large tree fell onto a home causing moderate damage. Damage to the grain elevator was estimated around $300,000.

A semi was blown over on I-39 one mile south of Wenona.

A tornado touched down briefly in a field 4 miles southwest of Lincoln. No damage was reported.

A tornado briefly touched down one mile south of Illiopolis. A porch on a home was damaged, a grain bin was damaged, and several power lines were blown down. No injuries were reported.

The tornado touched down west northwest of the intersection of Route 51 and County Route 20. The tornado then crossed Route 51 moving to the northeast. It damaged a couple of large oil pipeline storage tanks (put large dents in them), then the tornado weakened in an open field and dissipated.

The tornado touched down 1.8 miles northeast of Oreana, just east of Route 48. It moved to the northeast along Route 48, entering Argenta. The most severe damage was in two areas. The first was about 2 miles northeast of Oreana where the roof of a two story house was lifted off. The second was on the southwest side of Argenta, where part of the roof of a two story brick building was lifted off and placed on top of a lower building roof. Also, numerous trees, power poles, and power lines were blown down. A garage was destroyed in Argenta. No injuries were reported.

A tornado made a series of touchdowns over a 3.5 mile path. In Lodge, the tornado briefly touched down destroying a chimney on a house, then lifted and moved to the east. It touched down one more time near the intersection of Route 10 and I-72 in a field. No injuries were reported.

In Rantoul, thunderstorms winds blew out the windows on a business and damaged the roof. Six blocks to the east of the business, four houses sustained roof damage and a large rotten tree was blown over.

Several large tree limbs were blown down in Allenville.

Several homes sustained shingle damage due to the thunderstorm winds.

A couple of road signs were blown over as well as several large tree limbs in Effingham.

Numerous trees and tree limbs were blown down. In Greenup, a shed was destroyed and a tree was blown over onto a house causing minor damage to the roof. A couple of flag poles were bent by the winds at a local business.
