Heavy Snow and Winter Weather in Maine, November 26, 2000
A mixture of precipitation developed over the state Sunday, the 26th, wreaking havoc with the many travelers returning home from their Thanksgiving weekend. A southeast flow of moist air developed over Maine as a low pressure center moved slowly northeastward over the Great Lakes and high pressure moved eastward from near Nova Scotia.

A mixture of precipitation developed over the state Sunday, the 26th, wreaking havoc with the many travelers returning home from their Thanksgiving weekend. A southeast flow of moist air developed over Maine as a low pressure center moved slowly northeastward over the Great Lakes and high pressure moved eastward from near Nova Scotia. Cold air trapped near the ground in southern sections of the state caused the precipitation to fall as freezing rain for several hours before temperatures warmed, and quickly coated road surfaces with a layer of ice. Numerous accidents were reported due to the slick roads. In the mountains and foothills the precipitation started as snow, before mixing with or changing to sleet, freezing rain, and/or rain. Snowfall amounts generally ranged from 2 to 6 inches across the mountains and foothills.
