Abnormally cold air moved into southeast Kansas by the middle of December as the main jet stream carved out a deep trough of low pressure over the eastern 2/3's of the nation. This pattern continued through the early part of January. The combination of deep snow cover and an abnormally strong arctic air mass kept temperatures 10 to 20 degrees below normal.
