Very warm air surged north into Iowa with temperatures soaring into the upper 80s to near 100 during the afternoon. These temperatures were combined with dew point readings in the mid 70s in most areas. The airmass was capped and this limited thunderstorm development in spite of the approach of another cold front from the northwest. A few storms were able to break the cap over parts of central into southeast Iowa. The storms became severe quite quickly and produced hail of three quarters of an inch to an inch in diameter. Severe weather lasted only a couple of hours before weakening and moving out of the area.
