October 2000 was one of the driest Octobers on record across the state of Delaware. On a county weighted average, monthly precipitation totals were 0.1 inches in Kent and Sussex County and 0.5 inches in New Castle County. Normal monthly precipitation is around 3.2 inches. At the New Castle County Airport, the monthly precipitation total of 0.08 inches was the second driest October on record. It was only surpassed by October of 1924 (0.06 inches). While the dry weather did minimal agricultural damage, it left the region susceptible to brush and forest fires because of the newly fallen leaves.
