Very heavy rains of 3 to 5 inches from the previous night and into the early morning hours caused the James River at Columbia to rise above flood stage. The James rose above the flood stage of 13 feet on September 3rd and then rose to 14.63 feet on the 13th. The James continued above flood stage through the end of the month. As a result of the rise on the James, lowland and some agricultural land were flooded.
