Hail and Damaging Winds in Pennsylvania, June 7, 1999

A severe thunderstorm dropped large hail and produced damaging winds in Northampton County. Hardest hit were municipalities in the southwest half of the state. In Moore Township, a motorist was briefly trapped by a downed tree on Pennsylvania State Route 248. In Lehigh Township, a tree fell onto a home and punctured a hole through the roof above a bedroom. A utility pole fell onto another house in Bath. In Nazareth, fallen trees crushed a pickup and a camper and several utility poles were split in two. Easton was hard hit with about 25 calls of downed trees and wires. One eastbound lane of U.S. Route 22 was closed for several hours when part of a tree fell onto the roadway. Other municipalities that reported wind damage included Bethlehem, Palmer Township, Northampton and Walnutport Boroughs. Nickel size hail also fell in Walnutport. About 7,500 homes and businesses throughout the Lehigh Valley and Bucks County lost power. About 4,500 of the outages occurred in Bethlehem and Easton. No serious injuries were reported.
