Hail and Damaging Winds in Pennsylvania, June 7, 1999

Northeast Pennsylvania's only damage producing thunderstorms for the month came on this day as a disturbance in the upper atmosphere raced out of the Ohio Valley and across the Pennsylvania/New York border during the afternoon. Natural daytime heating and warm, humid air created very unstable conditions over most of the northeastern United States. Clusters of thunderstorms moved into and continued to develop throughout the area during the mid afternoon. Initial reports of damage came from Bradford county around 330 p.m. EDT where a porch was badly damaged and a five by eight foot section from a barn, located on South Side Rd. in Leroy Township, was torn off. A little less than an hour later, a roof was lifted off a house in Great Bend, Susquehanna county. Storms tracked east taking down numerous trees and powerlines in Wyoming, Wayne and Luzerne counties between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. EDT, then ferociously struck Pike county with widespread tree damage over northern sections of the county. One mobile home was destroyed and three others damaged in Blooming Grove.
