Heavy rain of 5 to over 10 inches fell over a large part of southwest Iowa during the evening of 8/6/99 and early morning hours of 8/7/99. A unofficial 14.5 inches was measured in 2 separate 5 gallon straight sided buckets from a farmer near Wales Iowa, about 25 miles upstream of Randolph. This heavy rain caused the west branch of the Nishnabotna River at Randolph and the mainstem of the Nishnabotna at Hamburg to flood. Agricultural bottomlands and a few county roads flooded. The stage at Randolph reached 23.2 feet during the morning of 8/8/99, flood stage is 19 feet, while at Hamburg the river crested at 28.8 feet during the morning of the 8th, flood stage is 23 feet.
