What happened
The episode as NWS DMX wrote it up.
A strong low pressure system developed to the southwest of Iowa. To the east of the low, a warm front extended east across northern Missouri. Very strong southerly winds of 60 knots or greater developed overnight and impinged on the warm front. The result was a large area of elevated convection. The thunderstorms raced northeast across the state. Though most of them did little more than produce gusty winds, pea to marble size hail, and very heavy rain, one of the cells did become severe. The cell turned right about 45 degrees to the flow and dropped a swath of hail across south central into southeast Iowa. Though most of the hail was one half to one inch in diameter, it accumulated to a depth of two to three inches over parts of Warren and Marion Counties. Damage was minor since the spring crops were not yet in the ground.
