The new year started with a vengeance weather wise as a major winter storm hit the area. Snowfall across the area ranged from 6 to 14 inches. To make matters worse, about an inch of freezing rain and sleet fell during the middle of the storm, creating a rock hard layer of ice that was very difficult to move. Transportation across the area came to a stop for much of the holiday weekend. Very cold temperatures after the storm kept conditions icy into next week, keeping most area schools closed trough the middle of the week.
