What happened

The episode as NWS GSP wrote it up.

A slow-moving cold front pushing south through North Carolina acted as a focusing mechanism for strong to severe thunderstorms in a moderately unstable airmass. Most of the wind damage was confined to downed trees and/or branches. However, hail was reported most often on this evening with unusually large hail, the size of softballs, pulverising an area in southern Catawba county. The hail stripped bark off trees and damaged sheet metal.
