Damaging Wind in New Jersey, June 1, 1998

A squall line of severe thunderstorms caused wind damage in western Gloucester County, especially in the municipalities on or near the Delaware River. The hardest hit were Deptford, National Park, West Deptford and Woolwich. Emergency personnel responded to around 85 calls of downed trees in the county. The thunderstorm winds tore the roof from a business in Westville Borough. In Woolwich Township, a home under construction was knocked over. Trees damaged a few other homes within the township. Trees also damaged homes in National Park Borough and Woodbury. Downed trees were reported as far east as South Harrison Township. About 74,000 Public Service Electric and Gas customers lost power during the height of the storm throughout their service area. Most of the outages though were in Burlington, Camden and Gloucester Counties. There were still 32,500 customers without power the evening of the first. All power was restored the morning of the second. Connectiv Energy also reported that 20,000 customers lost power in their southern New Jersey service area including Gloucester County. Several school districts had to cancel classes because of the outages on June 1st.
