Strong south winds averaged 20 to 30 MPH with higher gusts. Gusts were estimated near 58 MPH north of Cape Girardeau in Perry County, where shingles were blown off the courthouse. The strong winds were caused by the interaction of low pressure over the Plains with high pressure over the Atlantic coast.
