This was one of the hottest and driest months ever recorded across much of north Louisiana. Climatologically, May of 1998 was the second driest on record in Shreveport with only 0.15 inches of rain which was 5.03 inches below normal. The record was 0.08 inches recorded in 1886. There was a stretch of days extending back to April 28, 1998 where no measurable rain occurred for 28 days (through May 25, 1998). The last dry period exceeding 28 days occurred during the excessively hot summer of 1980. This was also the third warmest May of record with an average temperature of 77.3 degrees. The month ended on a record note with the high temperature recorded May 31st at 102 degrees. This was the highest temperature recorded on any day in May since records began in 1974.
