A warm front was located east to west across Iowa during the early morning hours. The front separated mild air from very unstable air to the south of the front. As the unstable air over ran the front and the front lifted north, thunderstorms erupted to the north of the front. Most of the storms produced gusty winds and hail, but only one was severe. Hail up to golf ball in size pelted Emmet County. At times, reports indicated the hail was falling so hard one could not see across the yard. There were reports of enough hail to completely cover the ground in places. Extensive crop damage was reported southeast of Estherville as a result of the hail. Golf ball size hail shredded fibreglass panels at a home southeast of Estherville. The largest hail report came from northeast of Dolliver in the Tuttle Lake area.
