Damaging Winds in Illinois, November 10, 1998

Thunderstorm winds blew down numerous trees, power lines and cable lines.

Numerous large tree limbs were blown down.

Several large trees were blown down. Also, several utility poles were blown down in Ellisville, Lewistown, and Canton.

In Mason City, a steel roofing system was blown off of an IDOT garage and numerous trees were blown down. Five miles north of Mason City, a tandem truck was blown off of Highway 136. The driver was not injured. In rural Mason City, a 2x4 was thrown through a bathroom window on a farm house and the roof was blown off of a machine shed.

Thunderstorm winds blew down numerous trees and power lines. In Divernon, two trees fell onto two houses, another one fell onto a mobile home and one tree fell onto a pickup truck. No injuries were reported and damage was estimated around $8,000.

In Tallula, a shed was destroyed. Several other sheds were either damaged or destroyed in the Petersburg area. Numerous trees and power lines were blown down. Also, one home sustained minor damage 3 miles north northeast of Petersburg. A wall on the attached garage was damaged. No injuries were reported and no damage estimate was available.

In Middletown, an empty grain bin was blown over and some windows were blown out of the grade school. Also, numerous trees were either blown over or snapped off and numerous power lines were blown down. Damage was estimated around $35,000.

Numerous trees and power lines were blown down. Three miles southeast of Taylorville a cinder block building was blown over onto Highway 29. In Assumption, a couple of buildings sustained moderate damage. One of the buildings lost its roof. Damage was estimated around $40,000.

Numerous trees and power lines were blown down throughout the county. A semi was blown over 4 miles west of Gridley and the driver sustained minor injuries. Also, twelve cars of a freight train were blown over at this location. The double-stack container cars were empty. In McLean, another semi was blown over but the driver did not sustain any injuries. Between Stanford and Danvers, nearly 30 structures, many farm buildings, sustained minor to major wind damage. Damage was estimated around $275,000.

As a line of thunderstorms moved through the area a 30 foot travel trailer was tipped over in Macon, injuring one person. The man sustained a dislocated hip. Then 4 miles east of Macon, a large tree was blown onto a house causing moderate damage. Also, two machine sheds sustained damage in the area. In Forsyth, a garage and an above ground swimming pool sustained damage from a fallen tree. No damage estimate was available.

Several power lines were blown down in Clinton.

In Kappa and El Paso, several power poles were blown down. Three miles northeast of El Paso, a couple of outbuildings were destroyed, the top half of a barn was blown off, and several power lines were blown down. No damage estimate was available.

Several trees and power lines were blown down in Cisco and Atwood.

Several trees and numerous tree limbs were blown down throughout the county. In Findlay, a barn built in the 1800s collapsed.

Numerous large tree limbs were blown down in Sullivan, some of which caused minor damage to the roof of a garage. No damage estimate was available.

Numerous trees and power lines were blown down. A semi was blown over at the intersection of I-72 and Highway 47. No injuries were reported.

Several trees were blown down in Hugo.

One mile west of Hoopeston, a shed was destroyed and a house sustained window and roof damage. No injuries were reported and damage was estimated around $30,000.

A historic ice cream stand was destroyed by the thunderstorm winds in Greenup. No damage estimate was available.

Several trees were blown down, one of which was blown down across Highway 36 near Chrisman.

Thunderstorm winds blew off part of the roof of the old railroad depot in Olney. Numerous trees and power lines were blown down throughout the county. Also, the city park building in Olney sustained minor roof damage when a 40 foot tall tree fell onto it. No damage estimate was available.

A large maple tree was snapped in half in Robinson and numerous tree limbs and power lines were blown down throughout the county. Three miles south of Flat Rock a tree was blown onto Route 1.

Thunderstorm winds blew some roofing off of a building in Marshall and several power lines were blown down. Also, several trees were uprooted. No damage estimate was available.

Several power lines were blown down 1 mile north of Petrolia.
