The Big Muddy River was above flood stage during most of the month at Murphysboro. The first crest on June 4 was 25.7 feet, well above the 16-foot flood stage. The river briefly dropped below flood stage from the 12th to the 15th, then crested at 21.9 feet on the 21st. The effects of this flooding were felt mainly by farmers who planted in agricultural bottomlands. In Murphysboro, parts of Riverside Park on the city's southwest side were under water, but no streets were closed and no homes had been evacuated.
