Scattered high-based thunderstorms developed during the late afternoon and early evening hours. There were numerous reports of 45-50 mph (39-43 kts) microburst wind gusts across northern Utah. Dry lightning sparked 3 wildfires and the winds helped them spread quickly. One fast-moving wildfire in Summit county forced the evacuation of 800 people in Tollgate Canyon, just west of Wanship. Fortunately wildfire fighting officials were able to contain the blaze that night without any property damage. A severe thunderstorm unleashed a 65 mph (56 kts) wind gust on the weather station at Brigham Young University in Provo. In nearby west Orem a weather spotter measured a 64 mph (56 kts) gust from that same storm. No damage was reported.
