Hail in Texas, November 6, 1996

A very moist and unstable air mass established itself over northern Texas on the 6th. By early afternoon, a cold front had moved into the northwestern portions of the area. The frontal movement slowed considerably due to an approaching upper level disturbance causing thunderstorms that developed to propagate over the same areas for several hours. Locally heavy rainfall and flooding resulted, especially in Denton, Grayson and Tarrant Counties.This heavy rain event ultimately evolved into a widespread severe weather event shortly before midnight as the upper level disturbance finally ejected out across the southern plains and the cold front accelerated. Severe thunderstorms that developed over the Big Country evolved into a series of damaging wind storms or "bow-echoes" as they moved into the southwestern portions of northern Texas. These thunderstorms moved rapidly eastward across the southern portions of North Texas between 2200CST November 6th and 0300CST November 7th. Widespread wind damage, due to convective gusts measured in excess of 90 mph, resulted in millions of dollars in damage.
