Hail in Oklahoma, June 19, 1996

Severe thunderstorms moved across eastern Oklahoma during the evening of June 18th and early morning of June 19th. The storms spawned 1 tornado, and also produced damaging winds and large hail.The tornado touched down briefly at 2310CST 3 miles north of Owasso near the intersection of 116th Street North and Memorial. No damage occurred with this F0 tornado.Damaging straight-line winds also occurred with the storms. Strong thunderstorm winds damaged buildings in Rentiesville, and a fireworks stand was blown over in McAlester. Strong thunderstorm winds downed trees and damaged outbuildings 9 miles northeast of Eufaula, and trees and large tree limbs were blown down in Cookson. 2.5 inch diameter tree limbs were blown down in Checotah, and an awning was blown off a vacant grocery store in Checotah. Numerous trees were blown down in Arkoma and 2 miles south of Arkoma, with one of the trees falling on a house 2 miles south of Arkoma. Large tree limbs were blown down in Panola, and shingles were blown off homes in Panola. Trees, large tree limbs, and power lines were blown down throughout all of Latimer County.Large tree limbs were blown down in Hollow, 2 miles west of Skiatook, in Catoosa, at 51st and Harvard in the city of Tulsa, near Stone Bluff, in Haskell, in Weleetka, and in Stigler. Thunderstorm winds gusted to 80 to 90 miles an hour 5 miles north of Okemah, to 80 miles an hour in Bixby and 1 mile north of Hectorville on the Tulsa/Okmulgee County line, and to 72 miles an hour at an automated observing site 3 miles south of Webbers Falls. Thunderstorm winds gusted to 60 to 70 miles an hour at numerous other locations in eastern Oklahoma. Large hail also accompanied the storms. Quarter size hail fell at Canadian, nickel size hail fell at Vian and 4 miles west of Vian, and dime size hail fell at Bixby and at Muldrow.
