Flash Flood in North Carolina, August 12, 1996

Heavy rain during the morning and afternoon hours on the 12th resulted in flash flooding across northwest North Carolina.Heavy rainfall in Watauga County flooded creeks and streams, resulted in 14 roads being closed, damaged some roads, and resulted in some evacuations.In Ashe County, heavy rainfall sent some creeks and streams out of their banks, washed away two low water crossing bridges, closed 23 roads, resulted in $70,000 in damage to roads and damaged a business in West Jefferson. A woman who drove into high water and became stranded was rescued by a truck driver.In Surry County, heavy rainfall flooded creeks and streams which resulted in road closings, 12 people being evacuated from a camp, and the flooding of a trailer.Heavy rainfall in Alleghany County collapsed a basement wall and resulted in minor damage to roads and bridges.In the western and northern portions of Wilkes County, runoff from heavy rain sent creeks and stream out of their banks, washed out approaches to some bridges, and resulted in $80,000 in damage to roads.
