Heavy Snow in New Jersey, December 7 to 8, 1996

A low pressure system developed over South Carolina and Georgia the morning of the 7th and moved quickly northeast passing over the Delmarva Peninsula during the late afternoon of the 7th, just east of the New Jersey coast during the evening of the 7th and near Portland, Maine on the morning of the 8th. In a similar occurrence to what transpired during the morning of the 6th, precipitation spread across Sussex County by early afternoon on the 7th. Precipitation type became elevation dependent. While a mixture of rain and snow fell in the valleys, more heavy wet snow fell over the higher terrain. The heaviest snow fell during the evening of the 7th. Snowfall accumulations averaged around 2 inches in the valleys and as high as around 7 inches over the higher terrain in the northwest part of the county. Representative accumulations included 7 inches at High Point and Wantage, 5 inches in Hainesville and 2 inches in Newton.
