A strong cold front moved across Iowa during the afternoon of the 18th. Although moisture was lacking with the system, there was enough upper level dynamics in place to aid in thunderstorm development. The first thunderstorms developed shortly after noon CST in central Iowa. These storms were not to become the main area of thunderstorms however. Later in the afternoon a line of intense thunderstorms developed over southeast Iowa along the cold front. By that time, dew point temperatures had pushed into the 50s across the area. The main feature with the storms was hail. Most of the hail was three quarter to one and one half inches in diameter. Later thunderstorms produced some hail up to golf ball and even baseball in size over the southeast counties. Three quarter inch diameter hail covered the ground east of State Center in Marshall County and also at Traer in Tama County.
