Hail in Colorado, May 22, 1996

A supercell thunderstorm tracked from southeast Wyoming into extreme northeast Colorado, through Logan, Sedgewick and Phillips Counties, over an approximately 2-hour period. The storm spawned two confirmed tornadoes which touched down in open country 4 and 5 miles west of Holyoke. A barn was moved 10 feet off its foundation near Paoli, or about 9 miles west of Holyoke. Although it could not be confirmed, a tornado was likely responsible for the damage to the barn. Several trees were also blown over in the Pleasant Valley area in southeast Phillips County. The majority of damage occurred with the large hail which accompanied the storm. The hail, ranging in size from 3/4 inch to 4 1/2 inches damaged crops and homes, breaking windows and damaging roofs, as it tracked across the area. Some farmers in Phillips County reported 30 to 40 percent crop losses but no dollar estimates of the damage to crops or property was provided.
