The storms which started in New Mexico increased in severity as they headed for Amarillo. The tornado that touched down west of Canyon destroyed about 20 homes, injuried 12 people, two seriously and was responsible for the death of a 39-year-old male. It is uncertain if he was outside or in his mobile home. His wife and four children were in the bathroom of the mobile home when the tornado hit. The mobile home was completely demolished and they survived with only minor injuries. Two women in an automobile had stopped on Highway 60 and were attempting to abandon their car when the tornado picked it up and dropped in about 60 yards from where they had stopped. The tornado also cut across a corner of a cattle feed yard killing a few cattle and damaging the yard. On the southwest side and the east side of Amarillo significant microburst wind damage occurred, effecting fences, roofs, mobile homes, and trees. The largest hail associated with these storms was mostly over open ranch land. The damage in Castro County occurred when strong outflow winds damaged several structures.

The storms continued to move rapidly northeast producing large hail, heavy rains, and a brief tornado. The heaviest damage occurred in Borger from the large hail. Another $500,000 water damage occurred indirectly because of clogged storm drains in Borger.

A severe thunderstorm developed across southeast Jack County around 1500 CST and moved northeast producing at least four tornadoes before crossing the Red River into Oklahoma, where it continued to produce tornadoes. The first tornado touched down in eastern Jack County near Wizard Wells and moved northeast into western Wise County in the Lake Bridgeport area. The second tornado first touched down five miles northeast of Sunset in Montague County, moved northeast to just south of Saint Jo, then moved into Cooke County northwest of Muenster. Tornado number two lifted and tornado number three developed near Bulcher. Tornado number three remained on the ground as the storm tracked into Oklahoma.

The supercell east of Wizard Wells continued to move northeast and produced another tornado near the Cid Richardson Boy Scout Ranch west of Lake Bridgeport. The tornado then moved northeast across the Lake before lifting. There was damage to a maintenance yard at the boy scout ranch and a few trees 12 inches in diameter were uprooted.

Tornado number two was a large tornado with a path one-half mile wide and 19 miles long. The storm ripped through Montague County, killing a 97 year-old man near Forestburg and injuring 11 other people. At least 30 houses and two mobile homes were destroyed, numerous barns and other outbuildings were destroyed, telephone and power lines were downed across the eastern half of the county, and an undetermined number of cattle and dairy cows were killed or injured. The Montague County tornado continued moving northeast into Cooke County three miles northeast of Saint Jo, then across northwest Cooke County to near Bulcher before dissipating. The tornado heavily damaged or destroyed seven homes, damaged or destroyed numerous barns, outbuildings, telephone and power lines, and trees.

The storm first touched down at 1625 CST near the town of Cut-N-Shoot in eastern Montgomery County. It crossed the county line at 1640 CST before lifting approximately five miles southwest of Coldspring.
