Severe thunderstorms moved across central and eastern New York during the late morning and early afternoon of the 4th ahead of a powerful cold front. At Norrie State Park in Staatsburg 75 to 100 trees were blown down. Central Hudson Electric and Gas Company reported over 16,000 customers without power during the height of the storms. Other areas hit hard by the storms were Livingston and Germantown in Columbia County where numerous trees were toppled some of which fell on homes.

A squall line moving across the region produced an enormous amount of damage during the afternoon hours. Powerful winds, the result of several microbursts, downed thousands of trees and power lines. Numerous structures received various degrees of damage. A significant amount of this damage occurred to the roofs. In Yonkers, a 50-foot tree crushed the front hood of a car waiting at a stop light. The driver was injured and taken to a hospital for treatment.
