Tornadoes and Damaging Winds in Maryland, July 6, 1995

Thunderstorm winds blew a tree across federal Highway 220.

Numerous trees were knocked down by thunderstorm winds in central Montgomery County in Gaithersburg. Some trees were also reported down in the southern part of the county.

Thunderstorm winds knocked down trees. Some blocked roads and others knocked out power. About 1,800 homes were without power. The temperature dropped 19 degrees in 15 minutes as it came through, dropping about two inches of rain in half an hour. Bennett Creek (extreme southern portion of county) flooded from the storm, and drivers on southbound Route 355 had to be diverted.

A funnel cloud was sighted by several people west of Ellicott City. Just south of Interstate 70 about a half mile east of the Marriottsville Exit, a gustnado briefly touched down in a wooded area. Debris was visibly seen coming up from the ground. A stand of trees about 50 feet by 50 feet along the side of Interstate 70. The path length was only 50 yards with a width of 50 feet. A house between Marriottsville and Ellicott was heavily damaged when a tree fell on it.

Thunderstorm winds knocked down about eight trees and some wires. Three hundred customers were without power in Northwest. Some trees were also reported down in Southeast.

A gustnado briefly touched down at a residence in Monkton. A 75-foot tall Hickory tree was twisted, but did not snap. Other debris was thrown in a circular pattern along a 25 yard path through the yard. The width of the path was estimated at no more than 20 feet. Four houses were struck by lightning in the Countyckeysville area, and trees were also blown down. Other thunderstorms blew down trees in Baltimore City. City and county wide, about 8,000 homes lost power.
