Severe thunderstorms brought both wind and lightning related damage across Mercer County. Winds gusted to 63 mph at Mercer County Airport in Trenton and reports of uprooted trees (at least 30) were received from Hamilton, Lawrence and West Windsor. One house roof in Hamilton was sagging from the weight of a tree. Two houses were struck by lightning in Lawrence Township and received minor damage. Three other homes were struck by lightning in West Windsor. The central radio system in Trenton was rendered inoperative by a lightning strike. A lightning strike on a 26,000 volt circuit in New Brunswick (Middlesex County) resulted in manhole explosions in downtown Trenton. In Hamilton Square a gas fire was started by a lightning strike on a power line. Eighteen people were evacuated from a nearby apartment house for safety reasons.
