Tornadoes and Hail in Georgia, June 27, 1994

Straightline thunderstorm winds moderately damage 20 to 25 homes and downed several trees and power lines from Cloudland to Menlo along Georgia Highway 48. Several vehicles were damaged from wind downed tree limbs in Menlo. Up to 500 residents and businesses were without electrical, telephone and cable services for nearly 21 hours. Most damage in Menlo was concentrated on Church Street west of Menlo United Methodist Church.

A short lived tornado was reported 15 miles north of Gainesville along a remote section of Georgia Highway 52. Several large pine trees were uprooted or snapped midway up from the crown.

A weak and short-lived tornado touched down along U.S. Highway 278 three miles west of Rockmart. A few pine trees were uprooted or snapped half-way up from the crown. The one injury resulted from wind blown debris.

A short lived tornado touched down along Old U.S. Highway 41 two miles south of Adairsville. The tornado destroyed three double-wide mobile homes and moderately damage three others. One double-wide trailer, occupied by a sleeping 5 year old female child, was tossed 125 feet which disintegrated on impact. The child was found in the rubble uninjured and still asleep. Twenty other homes received considerable roof and porch damage while several trees and 20 to 30 power lines were downed before the tornado dissipated. A 1000 electric customers were without power and 1900 residents lost telephone service for at least three hours in the Adairsville area. Two minor injuries were reported from wind blown shattered glass.

A tornado touched down and destroyed one brick home, three mobile homes, one business and moderately damaged three additional homes. The three homes moderately damaged suffered primarily roof and glass damage. Also, several trees were snapped midway from the crown and numerous power lines were downed from the tornadic winds.

Thunderstorm winds destroyed a chicken house and killed nearly 35,000 chickens on Mountain Loop Road in the town of Sugar Valley. Also, approximately two acres of pines trees were downed in the Johns Mountain Wildlife Area by thunderstorm winds.

Thunderstorm winds caused moderate damage to 30 homes and downed several trees and power lines in the Indian Hills Subdivision near the intersection of Georgia Highway 120 and Indian Hills Parkway. Estimated damage to homes was 450,000 dollars.

A short lived and weak tornado touched down along U.S. Highway 441 and downed several pine trees and power lines before dissipating.

A weak and short-lived tornado touched down along and crossed U.S. Highway 29 near the intersection of Georgia Highway 281 before dissipating. A few large trees lost large limbs and a couple of highway roadside signs were blown down. Three chicken houses were destroyed with a total value of 270 thousand dollars. Also, 60,000 chickens were killed.

A tornado touched down near Georgia Highway 124, four miles west of Grayson then moved east and tore into the Williums Acres subdivisions near Grayson. Five large homes were destroyed, 20 homes received major damage while another 34 had minor damage inflicted. One large two-story brick home (5300 square feet) took a direct hit in the Greystone subdivision and was reduced to rubble. The only known fatality occurred in the lower bedroom ,of this structure. The tornado threw the second story of the ,house 50 feet off the foundation while the first floor disin,tegrated. Ironically, upon inspection of the dislodged second floor of the home, stuffed animals remained intact and undisturbed on a bedroom window sill. Most of the homes that suffered major or complete damage in the Greystone subdivision were in a clear-cut zone. Those homes that were in wooded areas received the least amount of damage. At Pinehurst Trace road near the Grayson subdivision, another home was lifted and blown across the road were it broke in half. Most of the damage was concentrated near Georgia Highway 84, one mile southwest of Grayson and along Ozora Church Road, two miles southeast of Grayson. Damage estimates to property from this tornado was estimated at nearly 1 million dollars. (F10P)

A tornado touched down along Georgia Highway 81 and damaged at four businesses, tore the steeple of Bold Springs Baptist Church and downed several trees and power lines. At least four homes were heavily damaged and a couple of trailers were severely damaged. Damage to homes was missing roofs or smashed windows. Residents of the damaged homes heard the sound of a loud train as the tornado passed overhead. Nine injuries were reported due to wind blown or toppled debris from damaged homes. Two chicken houses were destroyed and three others moderately damaged by the tornadic winds.

A mobile home in the Rolling Hills Trailer Park, one mile east of Monroe on Georgia Highway 83 was tossed more than 50 feet from its foundation and severely damaged. One occupant inside the mobil home was uninjured but heard the sound of train as the tornado lifted his home off the foundation. Tornadic winds moderately damaged 20 homes, eight mobile homes and snapped several trees midway from the base near the inter- section of Georgia 83 and Old Monroe-Madison Road one mile southeast of Good Hope.

A tornado sporadically touched down and destroyed five homes, seven mobil homes, four chicken houses and three barns along U.S. 441 near the Oconee/Morgan county line. One fatality occurred in a mobil home on U.S 441 one mile north of the Oconee/Morgan county line. Three minor injuries also resulted from the homes damaged by tornadic winds. Numerous trees and power lines were also downed along U.S. Highway 441 from tornadic winds. (F27M)

Several trees were downed by thunderstorm winds onto at least eight homes in Tyrone. Slight to moderate roof and ,structural damage were reported to the homes.

A tornado touched down along Georgia Highway 20 near Mt. Zion Road, five miles north of Conyers where two large houses were leveled. The tornado lifted and descended several times at it moved east across rural Rockdale County. Numerous trees, power lines and poles were downed from the tornadic winds along its path. The tornado cross Georgia Highway 138, seven miles north- east of Conyers were it moderately damaged four homes before dissipating. A total of 30 homes and buildings were damaged of which six homes were totally destroyed. Three people were injured, primarily from fallen or wind blown debris. Nearly 200 residences and businesses were without power in the affected areas due to downed power lines.

A tornado touched down and destroyed 12 homes, severely damaged 28 to 30 additional homes and destroyed four chicken houses. Numerous large pine trees were uprooted or snapped half-way up from the crown. Damage to property in the Bostwick area was estimated at nearly 500,000 dollars.

A few large trees were downed along Georgia Highway 21 one mile north of Newington.

A few large trees were downed along U.S. Highway 301 14 miles southwest of Sylvania.
