AD 869 Jan 9 Constantinople. An earthquake caused some damage in the region of Constantinople, killing a number of people […] The earthquake happened on Sunday, on the festival of St Polyeuctus, in the third year of Basil I, before the opening of the eighth Synod, which met on 5 October 869, that is on 9 January 869, on which date the event was commemorated by the church. Nicetas Paphlagon (a contemporary), Leo the Grammarian (writing in the tenth or eleventh century) and the Synaxary of Constantinople ( dating from about the tenth century) all record that this earthquake happened on 9 January (the Feast of St Polyeuctus) during the reign of Basil I (AD 867-886). 869 Jan 9. An earthquake caused considerable damage in Constantinople, killing a number of people. The shock damaged the cathedral of Sta Sophia, part of which collapsed. The church of the Apostles which was damaged by the earthquake of 861, collapsed, together with the church of the Virgin at Sigma which fell during mass killing all in it except four people. A long series of aftershocks, some of them strong enough to cause additional damage in the city, continued for 40 days. (reference #14000)
