763 Khurasan, 33.3 N, 59.3 E, magnitude 7.6. In 763 there was a catastrophic earthquake in Khurasan which threw mountains from their place and left neither trees nor rocks in position. The area involved is impossible to identify but the shock, which triggered landslides or was associated with ground deformations, does not seem to have affected any centre of population. Possible locations, traversed by important routes, would be the Kuhistan district (Khwaf, Qayin, Tabas) or the Iajarm, Juvain, Nishapur area. (reference #1117)
