December 2, 362 Earthquake: Turkey

362 Dec 2. Nicomedia (Izmit) was 'totally destroyed' as well as a good part of Nicaea(lznik). Springs dried up. As a measure of relief the authorities lowered the price of essentials. The earthquake was felt in Constantinople and allegedly damaged the newly-built cathedral of Sta Sophia. (reference #14000)

362 Dec 2, Nicomedea. Four years after the earthquake of AD 358, Nicomedea was damaged again by another earthquake towards the evening of 2 December 362. This earthquake also affected much of Nicaea and Constantinople. In particular the Hagia Sophia (the predecessor to the existing building) in Constantinople was affected, its dome collapsing. its ambo broken up and parts of the sanctuary in front of the altar damaged […] The only damage recorded in Constantinople, which is mentioned in an anonymous Life of Constantine, is the collapse of the dome of the newly built Megalos Naos, that is, the old church of St Sophia, which is dated 'a little after' Julian's accession (11 December 361 ). Note that the church in question is not the church of St Sophia as Guidoboni (1989, 677) supposes, which was built between 532 and 537. (reference #9116)
