January 2, 2026 Earthquake: Guerrero, Mexico

The 6.5 magnitude earthquake recorded on January 2 caused direct material damage exceeding 15 million pesos [apprx. 834079 USD] to the commercial and tourism sector in Acapulco, Guerrero, according to reports from the local National Chamber of Commerce, Services, and Tourism (Canaco). The president of Canaco Acapulco, Alejandro Martínez Sidney, explained that the losses include inventory of glassware and liquor, as well as audiovisual and air conditioning equipment, and damage to the infrastructure of premises. The state's Secretariat for Comprehensive Risk Management and Civil Protection revealed that 1,300 homes have been assessed as damaged in 23 municipalities in Guerrero following the 6.5 magnitude earthquake, with 95 percent of the assessment complete. In an interview with Sol de Acapulco, he said that of the 1,300 homes with damage, most of them are minor and moderate. Three hundred and eighty homes with major and, in some cases, severe damage have also been assessed.
