August 24, 2016 Earthquake: Accumoli, Arquata, Amatrice, Italy

At least 297 people killed, 400 injured, 4,000 displaced and many buildings and roads destroyed or damaged in the Arquata del Tronto-Accumoli-Amatrice area. Felt (V) at Ascoli Piceno, Gualdo Cattaneo, L'Aquila, Montalto delle Marche and Spoleto. Felt in many parts of central and northeastern Italy as far as Bergamo, Terento and Trieste and as far southeast as Matera and Pompeii. Felt (IV) in Vatican City. Also felt in San Marino. Death toll from earthquake in central Italy is 278. The quake killed 218 people in Amatrice alone, according to the new toll, while the toll in Arquata, 49, and Accumoli, 11, was unchanged. Civil Protection said 238 people have been pulled alive from the rubble, and more than 2,100 people have been displaced by the quake. Although Civil Protection said there are no longer any missing persons in the Marche region, at least 15 people are still missing in Amatrice, a Lazio town that was mostly leveled in the quake. The death toll from the August 24 earthquake in central Italy rose to 297 after two people died in hospital Friday. One was from Amatrice, the worst-hit village, and the other from Arquata del Tronto, the second-worst-hit. The earthquake left them in critical condition. The 6.0-magnitude quake which hit before dawn on August 24 levelled whole villages in Lazio and Marche and left thousands homeless in the those regions as well as Umbria and Abruzzo.
