April 7, 1970 Earthquake: Luzon, Philippines

On April 7, 1970 at 05:34:05.6 UTC (15.8N, 121.7E, depth 37 km, magnitude 7.3 MS), an earthquake on Luzon, Philippine Islands, caused 15 deaths, more than 200 injured; major damage in the Manila area. Felt throughout Luzon island. (reference #45)

Total casualties were 14 killed and some hundreds injured. The deaths all resulted from the main shock on April 7, 1970, 05:34:06.2 UTC, 15.78 N, 121.71 E, magnitude 6.5 mb, depth 40 km. Some dozens of injuries occurred during the most severe aftershock at 12:02 p.m. [local time] on April 12, and a few injuries occurred during other aftershocks. The earthquake generated a tsunami. The earthquake was felt at an intensity of VII points (on the Rossi-Forel scale) in the region of Greater Manila: in Tugegarao, Baler, Dagupan, Baguio, Cabanatun, Infanta, and Gulod. Fourteen people died and over 200 were injured. There was great destruction in the Manila region. (reference #417)

Seven people were killed and more than 175 persons were injured as a result of the earthquake that did major damage in the Manila area and was felt throughout Luzon. (reference #3149)

Two years later on April 7, 1970 and about 72 km from the 1968 epicenter, a Ms 7.0 earthquake again occurred at 1:34 PM. This quake caused heavy damage to buildings in the town of Baler in Aurora province. Fissures opened and widespread landslides occurred along the epicentral area. Like the 1968 event, this also caused severe damage to buildings in Metro Manila. (reference #10958)
