6.2, Depth 80 km. Intensity VIII-IX. Malang: East Java - the worst hit was Dampit, a district situated just to the south of Malang; according to questionnaire reports, 1539 buildings were wrecked, 14 people were ki1led, 72 people were injured. Next to Dampit was Gondang where, according to a report, 9 people were killed, 49 people were injured, 119 buildings collapsed completely and another 402 buildings were cracked. 5 mosques were ruined. Attention should also be drawn to Trenggalek where 33 wooden houses were reported cracked and some houses have been moved slightly. In Besuki, the easternmost district of East Java, the intensity was of the order of III to VI MMI; in Tanggul, buildings sustained slight damage only. The shock was felt to the west as far as Banyumas (Cilacap); to the north a chain of hills in western East Java form a sort of barrier to the propagation of seismic waves. No report was received about a tsunami. (reference #1188)

1967, February 1, 22:14:35.3 UTC. 9.2 S, 113.1 E. South of Java. 54 killed and 300 injured at Malang, Java, and reports indicated 2000 house were demolished and an additional 5000 damaged by this earthquake. Magnitude 6.75 MS. (reference #45)
