April 10, 2021 Earthquake: Lumajang, Malang, Java, Indonesia

BNPB recorded 8 people died, 36 minor injuries, 3 moderate to severe injuries. BPBD Lumajang Regency identified 5 people who died in their area, while Malang Regency 3.

Meanwhile, the impact of damage to the housing sector was recorded in 15 districts and cities in the East Java region. The total number of damaged houses with different categories was 1,189 units, with details of heavy damage (RB) 85 units, moderate damage (RS) 250 and slightly damaged (RR) 854. Public facilities were also damaged with a total of 150 units damaged.

A number of other damages were reported by several BPBDs in East Java Province, such as the districts of Lumajang, Pasuruan, Trenggalek, Probolinggo, Ponorogo, Jember, Tulunggagung, Nganjuk, Pacitan, while the urban areas were Blitar, Kediri, Malang and Batu.

A destructive earthquake (Mw 6.1) struck East Java, Indonesia, on 10 April 2021, resulting in at least 10 deaths and damage to over 3000 buildings. Preliminary hypocenter determinations indicate that it was located ~20 km south of Java, at a depth of ~60 km, suggesting that it likely occurred within the subducting oceanic slab beneath the Sunda Arc [...] It damaged 3024 houses and caused at least 10 fatalities in East Java Province (https://www.bnpb. go.id/). Based on post-earthquake field surveys and measurements of rock characteristics by the BMKG team, the area most affected by the earthquake (V on the MMI scale) is located on the alluvial deposits of Blitar, Malang, and Lumajang (Fig. 1). The relatively high MMI for a moderate sized earthquake can be explained by the amplification effects of the unconsolidated alluvial material coupled with buildings not designed to withstand ground shaking. The team also identified that local topographic conditions such as buildings close to valleys and slopes conspired to amplify the damage (Supendi et al., 2021). (reference #13321)
