June 2, 1994 Earthquake: Java, Indonesia

On June 2, 1994, a magnitude 7.2 Ms (Mw 7.8) (HRV) earthquake at 18:18 UT occurred south of Java, Indonesia. The earthquake was about 200 km off the southeastern coast of Java. The earthquake occurred at night, and awoke only about 10 to 20% of the people. About 30 to 40 minutes after the earthquake, the waves (three distinct waves) began to arrive. Most of the people were still sleeping when the wave arrived, and the mostly-straw houses were washed away. About 223 people were killed, 15 were listed as missing, and 423 injured. The tsunami destroyed 1,500 homes, and 278 boats. The most affected districts were Lumajang, Jember, and Banyuwangi. Most of the fatalities and damage was caused by a tsunami at the villages of Pancer, Lampon, and Rajekwesi in the Banyuwangi district, the most eastern of the districts. (reference #1315)

At least 250 people were killed, 27 missing, 423 injured and many left homeless. About 1,500 houses damaged or destroyed and 278 boats sunk or damaged. Most of the casualties and damage were caused by a tsunami along the southeast coast of Jawa. Tsunami runup of 500 meters occurred in some places. The quake was felt strongly across Bali, central and eastern Jawa, Lombok and Sumbawa Islands. There were two events about 14 seconds apart. (Ref #1053)

The local government noted that 720 buildings were damaged, 223 people die, 22 people lost, and 440 people were injured due to the tsunami hit. According to a BMG survey, the flood of tsunami inundation can reach 300 m to the land in some coastal villages. The seismic analysis concluded this tsunami was categorized as the tsunami-earthquake or slow slip earthquake. According to the hypocenter and focal mechanism analysis, this earthquake was generated by thrust faulting in the Indian Ocean south of the Java subduction zone or locally named Sunda trench.
