January 24, 1917 Earthquake: Anhui Province, China

1917, January 24,08:48:12 Beijing time, in Houshan, Anhui Province, 31.3 N, 116.2 E, magnitude 6.25, intensity VIII.

Meizoseismic region including: Heishidu, Luoerling,

Majailing and Lanni'ao, etc. All old houses in the

region collapsed, bricks and tiles fell down everywhere.

Fairly good structures were tilted and oracles

occurred in walls. Roads fissured everywhere in

Luo'erling, Lutushipu, Lanni'ao and Heishidu

with ejection of water and sand. In Luoerling and

Lutushipu, rocks in mountains split, even landslips occurred. Kuashiya (fallen-rock cliff) in Wuguixia,

Luoerling was formed by rocks that fell in the

earthquake and was thus named

Huoshan: A pagoda cracked in its bottom; weak

houses collapsed; many chimneys and muddy

walls fell down. A landslip occurred, huge rocks

rolled down. The ground fissured somewhere as

wide as 13 cm and as long as 4 m. More fissures

occurred along the rivers with ejection. Wells

dried up. The ground sank into two pools in Shishizi

(1 km west of the county town). Dozens of

people were killed.

Foziling: Houses cracked everywhere. Plaster and

tiles fell in many houses.

Wuhan: Dozens of houses collapsed.

Luotian: A decorated archway of a family memorial

temple toppled at one corner. Two rooms in an

old house collapsed; an old eaves wall cracked about

1.7 m long and 7 cm wide.

Macheng: Some walls collapsed.

Funan: Some kitchen ranges collapsed.

Meishan: Some sections of muddy walls collapsed.

Liu'an: A few old walls and some eaves tiles fell down.

Qichun: Some roof-tiles fell down, and some walls

cracked.

Echeng: A block of stone fell from a pagoda in disrepair

outside the East Gate.

Xishui: Some roof-tiles fell down. An old brick

wall cracked about 15 ern wide.

Daye: The eastern wall of a church cracked 30 cm

wide and 6.6 m long. The enclosing walls of Huaji Cement Factory collapsed more than 6 m long.

The felt area was large, including:

Qianshan, Taihu, Susong, Taihe, Yixian, Wuhu,

Quanjiao, Shouxiat., Huoqiu, Shucheng, Anqing,

Huaining, Hefei, Tongcheng, Wangjiang, Lujiang,

Chaoxian, Wuwei, Chuxian, Lai'an, Hexian, Xixian,

Xiuning, Qimen, Xuancheng, Jingxian, Taiping,

Jingde, Guichi, Tongling, Shidi, Dongliu,

Qiupu (belonging to Zhide County), Tianchang,

Boxian, Fengyang, Yingshang, Mengcheng, Hanshan

and Nanchang in Anhui Province.

Guangshan, Zhengyang, Shangshui, Xinyang, Shangcheng,

Luoshan, Qpeshan, Runan, Shenqiu and

Tongbai in Henan Province.

Gaochun, Zhenjiaag, Suqian, Nanjing, Pukou, Lishui,

Danyang,Jintan, Wuxi and Jiangpu in Jiangsu

Province.

Huanggang, Xinzhcu, Yingshan, Yingshan, Jiayu,

Tongcheng, Hanchuan, Xiaogan, Huang'an,

Huangmei, Anlu, Yunrneng, Yingcheng, Xiangyang, Zhongxiang, Jingshan, Jingmen and Jiangling in Hubei Province.

Nanchang, Wuyuan, Dexing, Yifeng, Xinjian, Yiyang, Xiushui, Liujiang, Fengxin, De'an, Ruichang,

Yushan, Yugan and Duchang in jiangxi Province.

Hangzhou, Fuyang, Xindeng, Anji, Quxian, Chang;

shan, Kaihua and Fenshui in Zhejiang Province.

Yueyang, Xiangyin and Nanxian in Hunan Province.

The maximum range was 450 km according to the

records. Minor quakes continued for dozens of

days. Another earthquake occurred on February

22, some rocks rolled down the Mt. Huoshan.
