February 24, 1875 Earthquake: S. Mexico

1875, February 23. There was a strong earthquake at Manzanillo and Colima with great movement of water. Apparently, the report relates to the earthquake of 24.II.1975, about which the following is known: at 4:43, there was a strong earthquake at Manzanillo, accompanied by a deafening roar of the sea. It was felt weakly at Guadalajara. The night before, on February 23 at 20:18 (local time), a mild earthquake was felt at Guadalajara and a number of adjacent cities, and was accompanied by a series of aftershocks (Reference #415).

1875 February 24, 20 N 105 W, magnitude 6.5. Soloviev and Go (1975) described the earthquake as a “strong earthquake at Manzanillo and Colima with great movement of water” based on Fuchs (1886). It is likely that Fuchs obtained the information from press releases in which telegrams were published in the Diario de Jalisco, 25 February, and were cited as the source. However, the final report from Comision (Comision Sobre Los Temblores de Febrero de, 1875) stated that “dreadful sea roars” but “no sea wave invasion occurred.” (reference #13627)
