10 pm local time. The New York Times (1871) reported an earthquake shock "running in a direction forming almost a complete circle around the City of New York." The article mentions that these areas felt the shock: Staten Island, Long Island, Jamaica, Ridgewood, Hoboken, Weehawken, Brooklyn, Farmingdale, Brentford, and Smithtown. New York City "was spared the visitation."
