6:09 am local time. This earthquake was centered near High Bridge, NJ, and felt over a large area to the northeast and southwest. The total felt area covered points from Maine to Virginia in "a long, narrow elliptical zone of about 92,000 square km" (von Hake, 1975).
This earthquake knocked articles from shelves and rocked buildings in several towns in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New York. At Asbury Park, N.J., plaster was knocked from walls. At Philadeophia, Pa., windows were broken and crockery was oveturned. Felt from Fall Church, Va., and Washington, D.C. to Connecticut. (Reference #542)
