April 16, 1844 Earthquake: San Juan, St Thomas, Puerto Rico, US Territories

Reference #124 states that In San Juan all the stone masonry houses were cracked; one of the towers of the Catholic temple in Isabela was cracked. In Bacao the church suffered major damage and in Guyana the customs building was cracked.

Severe earthquake of 30 seconds duration. Felt in Puerto Rico, VII-VIII, and in St. Thomas. In Puerto Rico, several houses and some public buildings were overthrown or cracked. A tower of the temple at Isabela was cracked. The origin may have been north of Puerto Rico. The felt report from Guadeloupe must have been a n error"). Puerto Rico. A violent shock (2) . St. Thomas, Puerto Rico and Guadeloupe (3) . Puerto Rico VIII. In San Juan, nearly all stone houses were cracked. In Bairoa the church was badly damaged and there was damage to the customs hous- at Guayama (reference #1189)

Not mentioned in the Saint Thomas Tidende for the period of April 11th -May 11th although the Barbadian, 5.25.1844 refers to it being felt on this island (as cited in Robson, 1964). Reid and Taber feel that the report of the event being felt in Guadeloupe must be erroneous). First hand reports are primarily found for the eastern part of the island. Supposedly felt as far as St. Thomas and Guadeloupe. (reference #14050)
