May 13, 1844 Earthquake: Miyaneh, Garmrud, Esfahan, Iran

May 13, 1844, 19:00 [local time], Miyaneh-Garmrud, 37.4 N, 48 E, magnitude 6.9. In the evening of Monday 13 May an earthquake in Eastern Azarbaijan destroyed a considerable part of the districts of Sarab and Garmrud. In Miyaneh many villages were completely destroyed with great loss of life, and the town itself was half ruined. There are no data about the extent of damage in the district of Sarab and to the east, in the Sangavar valley. In the Garmrud and to the southeast in the Kaghaz Kunan districts, however, damage was serious. The affected region covers a large area and damage was reported from Aghkand, Yangikand and Armaghankhaneh. The shock was strongly felt in Tabriz and in Rasht. In Linkuran slow ground movements persisted for a few minutes. (reference #1117)

May 12, 1844, Isfahan, Azarbaijan, Iraq-i-Adjmami, III. Isfahan and Azerbaijan are distant. Mostly likely these were separate events of different (even widely different) dates and these often get combined by reports careless as to preciseness regarding time, date and geography. Thus in the 1843-1844 it is most likely that there occurred three distinct earthquakes - at Khoy and Sarab in Azarbaijan and at Kashan (near Isfahan) in province of Iraq-i-Adjami. (reference #1217)
