June 29, 1759 Earthquake: Jorullo, Mexico

1759 June 29 Strong earthquake: Jorullo, destruction when erupting; three months before many tremors. (reference #1195)

1759 June 29 and following days, Mexico frequent violent shocks, volcano Jorullo formed in Michoacan. (reference #1055)

1759 June 07. It is reported that the cathedral of Guadalajara and many houses were ruined, as well as the cities of Zapotlan, Zacoalco and other towns. Near the copper mines of Inguaran some houses collapsed. This earthquake is associated with the birth of the Jorullo volcano. Interpretation by the Instituto de Geofisica: The effects reported in Zacoalco, Cd. Guzman and Guadalajara suggest that it is a local earthquake [...] However, the association made with the Jorullo is doubtful since these types of volcanic events do not produce earthquakes of sufficiently large magnitude to produce the damage reported at those distances. In addition, there is no reported damage in the area surrounding the volcano. The only source reporting such damage is Martinez. The absence of information makes it very doubtful. There is another data from the Pausic Archive that indicates that the earthquakes in Zapotlan, Jal. on the 20th and 21st became catastrophic. This independent reference suggests that there were indeed some earthquakes that caused damage in the Zapotlan area on those dates. (reference #13024)
